  2. Need To Have Common Vision On Biodiversity To Reduce Loss - Kurup

KUALA LUMPUR - The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry wants all relevant stakeholders to work closely with the government to implement the Common Vision on Biodiversity (CVB) aimed at reducing biodiversity loss.

Its deputy minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said the ministry had positioned and fine-tuned the policy on biodiversity based on the New Economic Model, which identified the need for the country to leverage upon rich biological resources to be sustainably utilised for new wealth creation and social well-being.

"In brief, the Common Vision calls for the need to incorporate biodiversity consideration in the planning and development process," he said at the National Seminar on Biodiversity (MyBio-D) 2010 on Monday.

According to him, the CVB complements the 1998 National Policy on Biodiversity and has three main elements which focus on mainstreaming biodiversity, and strengthening the protected area system and application of eco-system approach in managing biodiversity.

The CVB was adopted by the National Biodiversity Biotechnology Council in November 2009.

Kurup said the implementation of CVB was one of the moves to prepare for the 10th meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan in October.

He said the conference would deliberate on new targets for biodiversity beyond 2010.

"This is very crucial since the current 2010 targets have not been met by the global community while biodiversity loss globally is continuing. Hence, at COP 10, we have to take constructive actions to address this issue as biodiversity loss will impact on many other parameters including climate change," he said.

Kurup said another important issue at COP 10 would be the adoption of an International Regime on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing.

"This international regime is extremely important for countries rich with biodiversity such as Malaysia to ensure we accrue the benefits arising out of the utilisation of genetic resources. This is one of the core elements to ensure Malaysia will be able to generate wealth from its biodiversity.

"We have been actively engaging in the negotiations and have been the strong voice of developing countries to ensure that this international regime will be a reality as called for by the world leaders at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002," he said.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Ahmad Nasfy Yassin said the accused should be aware of the danger of drugs as he was a family man.

"Normally, any accused would express remorse after they were caught and found guilty. However, remorseness takes a back seat if they not arrested," he said.

Ahmad Nafsy ordered the sentence to start from the date of arrest.

  5. MIC To Consolidate Indians, Says Samy Vellu

KUALA LUMPUR - The MIC will spearhead the consolidation of the Indian community in a bid to strengthen the party's power base and bargaining power with the government, party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said on Monday.

He said the MIC, being the third largest political party in the Barisan Nasional (BN), has to lead the consolidation process to ensure that the party becomes "a much stronger voice" for the community.

"The time and political situation in the country demand that we unite or risk breaking up further into many groups which, in the end, will only make the community lose its strength," he said in a statement here.

Samy Vellu was commenting on the statement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday that the leadership issue plaguing the Indian community, due to the emergence of small groups representing the community, must be resolved.

Najib had said that the Indians must consolidate themselves under a strong leadership to enable the government to address their needs.

Samy Vellu said it was easy to form political parties and become leaders, "but to strive for the well-being of the Indian community is not an easy task".

"The MIC has been doing this since the country achieved independence, but the formation of small groups or political parties has hindered this process to a certain extent," he said.

He urged Indians to unite under one roof or risk being alienated further.

"The MIC will continue with its struggle for the Indians, but to do that we must be united and speak with one voice," he said.

Although the MIC chief stopped short of calling for a merger of the political parties representing the Indians in the country, he said however that the MIC was the only party that could represent the aspirations of the community.

"We have a broad-based representation and branches in every corner of the country. We are able to touch base with the people at any time," he added.

  6. Umno Members Should Come Out In Force To Vote - Raja Nong Chik

KUALA LUMPUR - Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin has reminded Umno members to perform their duty as voters to ensure that the Barisan Nasional (BN) would continue to lead the government.

He said this was because the large membership would not guarantee the party would remain strong if members failed to support it when come to the crunch.

"For example, in my constituency (Lembah Pantai), we have 17,000 Umno members but only about 8,000 members turned up to vote in the last general election. This means about 50 per cent of Umno members in Lembah Pantai did not cast their votes.

"They are the ones who will ask for the party's support, houses and all sort of things but when we checked, some of them did not register as voters in Lembah Pantai," he said when opening the Kepong Umno division Wanita, Youth and Puteri delegates' meetings here Sunday.

Raja Nong Chik, who is also Federal Territories Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman, said the party should intensify its voter registration exercise among members to ensure that they support the party when needed.

Meanwhile, Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, in her speech, wanted the movement to change its approach in reaching for the people.

Shahrizat, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister, said Wanita Umno should hold more programmes involving the people and not just among themselves.

"We need to reach the people and move out of our comfort zone. We must change the way we think, how we interact and engage in politics. Only then we can lead the younger generation," she said.
