Trader Gets Four Years' Jail, Six Whipping For Robbery
KUALA LUMPUR - A fruit trader was sentenced to four years' jail and six strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court here today after he pleaded guilty to three charges, including two for armed robbery.
On the first charge, Harun Hashim, 34, from Hulu Langat, Selangor, was accused with two others still at large of robbing a cook, Muhamad Hairul Abdul Hamid, 17, of his handphone and RM20 at Jalan Raja Laut, Dang Wangi, here at 5pm last June 14.
Need To Have Common Vision On Biodiversity To Reduce Loss - Kurup
KUALA LUMPUR - The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry wants all relevant stakeholders to work closely with the government to implement the Common Vision on Biodiversity (CVB) aimed at reducing biodiversity loss.
Its deputy minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said the ministry had positioned and fine-tuned the policy on biodiversity based on the New Economic Model, which identified the need for the country to leverage upon rich biological resources to be sustainably utilised for new wealth creation and social well-being.
Man Jailed For 10 Years With 10 Whippings For Drug Possession
SEREMBAN - A father of six children was sentenced to 10 years' jail and 10 strokes of the rotan for drug possession after he pleaded guilty at the Seremban High Court here on Monday.
Shaharizam Amarang, 35, who has children aged between two and 14 years, was charged with possession of four slabs of cannabis weighing 372 grams.
He was arrested at a restaurant in Batu 8, Jalan Mantin, Seremban at 1.15am on Dec 20 last year and led the police to his car where the drug was found.
Proposal To Rename Jalan Ampang As Jalan Tun Dr Mahathir
KUALA LUMPUR - Cheras Umno chief Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee has proposed that Jalan Ampang be renamed Jalan Tun Dr Mahathir in recognition of his service as prime minister for 22 years.
He said Dr Mahathir was responsible for developing Malaysia, a respected and important member of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

KUALA LUMPUR - The MIC will spearhead the consolidation of the Indian community in a bid to strengthen the party's power base and bargaining power with the government, party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said on Monday.

Almost RM60 Million Spent To Instill CCTV Cameras In 25 Local Authority Areas
PETALING JAYA - The Housing and Local Government Ministry has allocated almost RM60 million to install and manage 496 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in 25 local authority areas nationwide to reduce crime, Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said Friday.
He said the allocation was for a five-year period and all the CCTV cameras were expected to be installed by the end of August this year.

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he did not interfere with the appointment of his son Edi Baskoro as secretary-general of the Democratic Party.
The appointment of Edi Baskoro or Ibas raised concerns whether the inexperienced 29 year-old could do the job.
Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum announced Ibas' appointment on Thursday. He replaced Marzuki Alie, the Indonesian parliamentary chief.

KUALA LUMPUR - Wanita PPP (People's Progressive Party) wants to be like the other women's wings of the Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties -- to be given a place in government.
Wanita PPP chief Datin Josephine Anne said the party had struggled and worked together with the other components and given its solid support to BN, especially in the general elections and by-elections.
